چکیده

Shape from shading with multiple light sources is an active research area and a diverse range of approaches have been proposed in the last decades. However, devising a robust reconstruction technique still remains a challenging goal as the image acquisition process is highly non-linear. Recent Photometric Stereo variants rely on simplifying assumptions in order to make the problem solvable: light propagation is still commonly assumed to be uniform and the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function is assumed to be diffuse, with limited interest for specular materials. In this work, we introduce a well-posed formulation based on Partial Differential Equations for a unified reflectance function that can model both diffuse and specular reflections. We base our derivation on ratios of images, which make the model independent from photometric invariants and yield a well-posed differential problem based on a system of quasi-linear PDEs with discontinuous coefficients. In addition, we directly solve a differential problem for the unknown depth thus avoiding the intermediate step of approximating the normal field. A variational approach is presented ensuring robustness to noise and outliers (such as black shadows) and this is confirmed with a wide range of experiments on both synthetic and real data, where we compare favorably to the state of the art.

Translucency and Photometric Stereo

The photometric stereo method for acquiring surface geometry is only valid for a specific class of materials captured under directional lighting conditions. The ideal material for this method is Lambertian a material that completely and diffusely reflects incident light. Translucent materials, while apparently diffuse, break these restrictions. Due to subsurface light transport (specifically, m...

Deep Photometric Stereo on a Sunny Day

Photometric Stereo in outdoor illumination remains a challenging, ill-posed problem. Indeed, it has been shown that the scene structure cannot be recovered unambiguously from the photometric cues alone when it is lit by the sun over the course of a single day. In this paper, we present a CNN-based technique for photometric stereo on a single sunny day. We solve the ambiguity issue by combining ...

Enhanced Photometric Stereo with Multispectral Images

We introduce a technique based on multispectral images aimed at improving Lambertian photometric stereo. Many photometric stereo algorithms assume Lambertian reflectance, but deviations from this ideal produce errors in shape reconstruction. To alleviate this problem, we exploit the wavelength-dependence of material reflectance. Based on the observation that reflectance at certain wavelengths f...

Shape and Materials by Example: A Photometric Stereo Approach

This paper presents a technique for computing the geometry of objects with general reflectance properties from images. For surfaces with varying material properties, a full segmentation into different material types is also computed. It is assumed that the camera viewpoint is fixed, but the illumination varies over the input sequence. It is also assumed that one or more example objects with sim...
